Faculty of Engineering Leads Robotics Track at RoboDam 2026 with Smart Innovation Saving 75% of Water and 55% of Energy

Mechatronics Engineering students secure first place among 65 teams from 21 Egyptian universities and institutes, while their self-cleaning robot offers a promising model for local manufacturing.
Students from Faculty of Engineering at Tanta University have achieved another success in national innovation and technology competitions, with the Autonomous Cleaning Robot team from the Mechatronics Engineering Department winning first place in the Robotics Track at the national RoboDam 2026 Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Competition.
The competition was hosted by Damanhour University in cooperation with the Information Technology Institute (ITI), bringing together 65 teams and approximately 300 male and female students representing 21 universities and institutes from across Egypt.
The team participated under patronage of Prof. Mohammed Hussein, President of Tanta University, and the leadership of Prof. Al-Sayyed Al-Agouz, Vice President for Education and Student Affairs. The team was supervised by Prof. Ahmed Nasr, Dean of Faculty of Engineering, and Prof. Mustafa Al-Sawwaf, Vice Dean for Education and Student Affairs.
The participation forms part of the university strategy to support student innovation, promote applied research, and connect academic projects with the needs of society and industry.
During the competition, the team presented an AI-powered self-cleaning robot based on advanced artificial intelligence and mechatronic systems. The project combines operational efficiency, environmental sustainability, and economic feasibility.
According to the reported results, the robot has the potential to reduce electricity consumption by up to 55% and water consumption by up to 75%, while also cutting local manufacturing costs by more than 90% compared with similar imported solutions. These figures, if validated under broader operating conditions, could point to opportunities for developing Egyptian-made technological solutions suitable for wider manufacturing and deployment.
For his part, Prof. Ahmed Nasr, Dean of Faculty of Engineering at Tanta University, stated that the students’ first-place finish reflects the strong academic and practical capabilities developed by students in specialized engineering programs, as well as their ability to transform their knowledge and skills into competitive innovations.
In addition, Dr. Nasr expressed his appreciation to Dr. Hany Al-Ghayesh, the project supervisor, for his scientific and technical guidance and his contribution to developing the project. He also praised Dr. Ahmed Khaira, the program coordinator, for his continued follow-up with the students and his efforts to provide an educational environment that supports creativity and excellence.
It is worth noting that the team consisted of Youssef Gamal Qamar A-Dawla El-Sotouhy, Hussain Alaa Ra’fat Al-Alousy, Julius Raymond Yahia Karam, Ahmed Mohammed Abdul Fattah Al-Seba’ey, Mohammed Ashraf Qassem, Mirna Walaa Al-Gammaal, Mohammed Mahmoud Mahmoud Ayyoub, and Mazen Galal Mohammed Ibrahim.
